Role of Education in knowledge based economy discussed with SRC officials

State Council's Education and Research Committee meeting on Tuesday chaired by Hon.Dr. Abdullah bin Mubarak Al Shanfari, Head of the Committee hosted HE Dr. Hilal bin Ali Al Hinai, Secretary General of the Scientific Research Council (SRC), Sayyed Dr. Fahad Bin Aljulanda Al Said, Assistant Secretary General for Innovation Development Department and Dr. Idris Al-Rahbi, Director of the Department of Studies and Planning, to obtain inputs for its ongoing study on the role of education in supporting the knowledge-based economy.
The committee conducted in-depth- discussion with the officials of the Scientific Research Council. It pertained to the various dimensions of the knowledge economy in the philosophy of scientific research in the Sultanate, the role of scientific research in supporting the economic development process and promoting the transition into a knowledge based economy by building an advanced system of scientific research and innovation.
It also discussed the strategy of education and scientific research, the national strategy for innovation to promote the direction of the knowledge economy, awareness of the importance of technology in the production of knowledge and the need to strengthen technological and innovative capabilities and employment in support of the knowledge economy, the intensification of research and innovation activities, the introduction of scientific methods that promote the knowledge-based economy, the promotion of practical use of the results of field and applied research and linking them to industry.
The meeting also discussed the Scientific Research Council's efforts to achieve its vision of the Sultanate being a regional hub for innovation and pioneering in the creation of ideas and the provision of new goods and services as well as the readiness of the Sultanate’s research system that responds effectively to economic needs.
The discussion focused on the role of the national strategy for innovation in meeting the needs and facing the current and future challenges of the Sultanate, especially the economic aspects and the efforts exerted to realize its vision based on achieving a national economy based on innovation and transforming into a national economy led by innovation through an effective national innovation system for sustainable development.
The meeting reviewed the challenges facing implementation and the proposals needed to address them.
The committee also reviewed the letter of the Council Bureau pertaining to the proposed topics to be discussed at the next meeting.
