Aquatic Resources Law discussed by Economic Committee at State Council
13 Jun 2018
The Economic Committee of the State Council on Wednesday at its twelfth meeting, focussed attention on the draft Living Aquatic Resources Law, referred by the Council of Ministers along with the report from Majlis A’Shura.
The Committee meeting chaired by Hon. Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah Hamed Al Harthi, was held in the presence of the honourable Committee members.
They reviewed the aims of the project, the most prominent of which is organization of commercial fishing activity to allow exploitation of deep-sea fishery resources and offshore sites in a way that does not conflict with the interests of artisanal fishermen, in particular, since after the first legislation on regulating marine fishing in the Sultanate was passed in 1981, there has been a qualitative leap in the artisanal fishing sector.
They also reviewed the equipment and means of fishing used, the growing numbers of Omani nationals who are fishing as a major craft, or the qualitative development of the fishing fleet entry into the activity of coastal fishing vessels under the policies of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries to develop the artisanal fishing sector using ships with specifications and techniques developed to contribute to the exploitation of fishery resources in marine sites where traditional artisanal fishing boats and vessels are unable to access them.
The draft justifies the growth and development of fishing-related activities, such as marketing, manufacturing, transport, trade and export, as well as the initiation fish farming activity, which is reliable as a natural fisheries support sector to bridge the gap in some types of living aquatic resources of economic value and contribute to food security.
During its meeting, the Committee discussed the comments of the members on some of the draft articles serving this activity, adopted the minutes of its previous meeting and informed the follow-up report on the implementation of the decisions taken.
