‘Relationship between media and parliamentarians: basic principles and skills ’ workshop held

State Council on Tuesday, organized a workshop entitled, ‘ The relationship between the media and parliamentarians: the basic principles and skills’.
Attending the workshop were several honorable Council members and the Secretary General of the Council.
The workshop validated the important role played by the media in the parliamentary work by raising awareness of the role of the parliamentary councils, the definition of their functions and competence.
HE. Dr Khalid Bin Said noted that the State Council has placed great attention to information, and has establishment the Secretariat for media and public relations which includes a department of information. It works on the implementation of the policy of the Council and efficiently shares reliable information with the community and world through various media platforms.
He explained that the Council seeks to keep abreast of the latest developments in the media scene which resulted in what is known as the new media, and extensively depends on technology and has many advantages, including high speed, interactivity and huge reach.
Dr Khalid highlighted the keenness of the Council to enhance the knowledge and skills of the honorable members who are involved in dealing with the media and develop the capabilities of its employees in order to optimally use media to serve the Council's mission.
The workshop included presentation by Dr. Abdullah bin Khamis Al-Kindi, Associate Professor of Journalism at Sultan Qaboos University, and aimed at developing the knowledge and skills of the honored members of the State Council, in addition to his staff, in dealing with the media.
It aimed to enable efficient equation with the mass media so as to enhance the Council's standing and enhance its positive image in society through optimum utilization of mass media.
The presentation touched various aspects of mass media, the nature of its work, its technical developments and its various effects.
It also reviewed the skills and mechanism needed to deal with the media.
Dr. Abdullah pointed to the main objectives of the parliamentary media, including: highlighting the role of parliamentary councils in monitoring and legislating, activating the role of citizens in evaluating the performance of the parliament and raising the level of popular participation in parliamentary decision-making and recommendations by measuring public opinion trends.
The presentation also highlighted the scope of parliamentary work, promotion of the principle of dialogue, the provision of greater transparency and objectivity to parliamentary action, the dissemination of parliamentary awareness, the Council’s resolutions and its working mechanisms.
Al-Kindi pointed out that the State Council and the Shura Council are seeking to develop their relations with the mass media, thus helping to achieve their objectives.
The workshop included extensive discussions with the participation of the audience.
